Graphitization is the process of converting non-graphitic carbon structures into crystalline graphite under extremely high temperatures—typically above 2800°C. The graphitization furnace creates this high-temperature environment using resistive heating. When a strong electric current passes through carbon-based materials, they generate heat due to electrical resistance. This internal heating raises the temperature rapidly, enabling the carbon structure to reorganize into high-purity graphite.
The graphitization process generally includes three stages: heating up, holding, and cooling. During the heating stage, the temperature must increase gradually to avoid cracking caused by thermal stress. The holding stage is critical for the formation of graphite crystals, requiring precise control over both temperature and duration. Lastly, the cooling stage must also be slow and stable to maintain the integrity of the final product.
There are different types of graphitization furnaces used in the industry, such as the Acheson furnace and the internal series-parallel furnace. The Acheson furnace is widely used for large-scale production due to its simple structure and energy efficiency. In contrast, the internal series-parallel furnace offers more uniform heating and higher graphitization quality, making it ideal for high-end graphite materials.
